Buzzbrews at Central 75 and Fitzhugh!

April 2014…

Hey!  Sorry I haven’t written in a while.  I got side-tracked with this silly thing called LIFE!  Anyways, I’ll post my rough draft and just edit it later.  I’m itching to get another post under my belt.  Also, notice that I put links at the end of my posts to the restaurant website.  I do this because over time, a lot of these places change Chef’s and management causing the menu and decor to possibly change as well.  Check the dates on my posts and possible updates in the end of the post.  If it’s old, it’s old.  Just read for fun.

Okay, Buzz Brews is by far my favorite breakfast place to go in Dallas.  They are open 24 hours a day at the location I go to, and it’s BYOB during regular bar hours.  They do NOT have a bar.  They DO have a huge selection of coffees to choose from.  If you get up to get some, it will end up on your tab of course.  A lot of people get pancakes, omelette, steak, or just dessert.  I always get the same thing even though I have tried almost everything on the menu over the years.  I get the build your own crepe stuffed with turkey, spinach, button mushrooms, avocado, and cheese (I do switch the cheese up sometimes).  All crepes are served with a delicious poblano cream sauce over the top and a side of fruit, toast, and jelly.

To drink?  I usually get the kombucha of the day.  I always love it when they have the apple ginger one, but I am never disappointed if it’s different.  Speaking of drinks, if I’m not very hungry, I just get a smoothie and add green stuff to it.  It comes with a buttered honey toast and jelly to balance out the health factor.

Warning, they do have community seating, so it’s possible a stranger may end up at your table if they run out of tables.  It’s never happened to me, but the idea scares and excites me at the same time…  Scared more, so instead of sit at a table, I now sit at the “bar” where the desserts are displayed.  I can’t have a stranger staring at me while I eat asking me for my toast while they wait on their food causing me to seemingly accidentally cough all over my food as I wipe saliva from my chin, palm the toast, and hold it out.  “Here you go.”

Alrighty then!!!  In short, their food is always good when I go.  I found my favorite item.  Now go and find yours.  Tell them eatingdallas.net sent you!!!  🙂

J. Black’s on Henderson! (CLOSED)

We got really lucky on the night we visited J. Black’s.  We were just driving around and randomly chose this place.  I said, “Let’s just go there.  I’m too hungry to think.”  It was Tuesday, and they have half-priced pizza and $3 select drafts on that day!  Score!!!  I think I got the Rahr Whiskey Warmer.  Plus it was kinda slow, so we had awesome service.  I didn’t know if our server was a manager, server, bartender, or all the above, because he was all over the place.  Behind the bar, on the floor, making drinks, running food, adjusting other server checks, etc.  Whatever the case, he was bombtastic.  I hate that they were kinda slow, but I loved it too.  It was nice and laid back.

For an appetizer we got calamari.  It was great!  It came with greens, parmesan, cocktail and tarter sauce.  As soon as we were done, we got our half priced pizza.  We were gonna get the crab an portobello pizza but ended up getting the omnivore that was recommended by our server/manager/bartender/owner/carpenter dude.  He said that he thinks seafood is odd on a pizza… to him.  He said it’s good but odd.  I like odd. I’m gonna try it next time.  Anyways, we got the omnivore.  It had Jimmy’s Italian sausage, pepperoni, salami, ranch bacon, mushrooms, pepperoncini, and feta.  It was nice.  The crust was thin and crispy, and it was meaty.  Very flavorful!  The half priced pizza deal strayed me from perusing the rest of the menu, but after we were done, I realized they had lollipop lamb chops!  I love lamb!  Sooooo……  next time I’m getting the weird pizza and lamb.  No need for a menu.  Just ring that in please…  And crab cakes.

Off the subject, I LOVE that they played some old school Michael Jackson.  I think it was Girlfriend or P.Y.T.  I was in heaven.  Also, the seats were super comfy, and there was a LOT of … HD TVs!  😉  I highly recommend this place during their slow times.  I’ve heard less impressive stories during their peak hours on the weekend.  To be honest, that’s the case at any restaurant or bar.  It’s just common sense.  We all strive for perfection, but we’re only human.  Sometimes we fumble.

Velvet Taco at Knox/Henderson and Central(75)!

Alright.  So this is my first takeout post!  I really wanted to do one, and Velvet Taco immediately came to mind.  By takeout, I mean no servers, but they do have a dining room and beer.  These aren’t street vendor tacos, though, even though I love those as well.  These tacos are made with quality ingredients and seemingly by a Chef.  Also, just because they don’t have servers doesn’t mean to pretend the tip jar isn’t there.  Throw something in.  You’ll feel better.

I had two tacos.  I was satisfied, but three would’ve filled me up.  I only ordered two this time, because one of my tacos was a bit pricy, but I HAD to try it.  It was the maine lobster.  It was good, but if I would’ve expected the lobster to be cold, I would’ve enjoyed it more.  Good flavor, just shocked by the temperature.  The shredded pork taco I had was excellent!  It made me moan (just a little bit okay).  It had bleu cheese crumbs and avocado cream on it!  They may not have a bar or servers, but there is a beautiful wall with shelves of healthy beverages, but on the bottom?…  Beer!  Good beer at that!  If you’re not a boozer like me, then they have creamsickle tea that gets refills like the sodas.  I also highly recommend the rotisserie corn “elote style”.  Just get it.  You’ll like it if you like corn.  If you like chicken, it looks like they slow cook it rotisserie style.  You’ll see the whole birds rotating.  A chicken taco is next on my list.  I didn’t see the those birds until after I ordered.  😦

They do have two little patios, if that’s what you’re looking for.  If you’re looking for some HD action, get it to go or for “takeout”.  😉  Anyways, I just had to say HD for no reason.  Check this place out. Their food is great.

La Calle Doce at Skillman and Oram!

I went to La Calle Doce Mexican Seafood for their lunch specials.  Go figure!  My first lunch special post!  It’s probably because I’m not a big fan of daywalking.  So, I decided to take one for the team and do this for “you people.”  By “you people,” I mean normal.  Also, I took another one for the team and did this for the “not lactose intolerant.”  The food coma afterwards was worth it!  I got the sour cream chicken enchilada that came with beans and rice all for $7.95!  Delicious.  My buddy ordered the first special off the board for $5.95.  I think they were crispy chicken flautas with beans and rice.  He gave me a taste.  Really good stuff.  It’s funny that the cheaper special comes with a cup of chicken tortilla soup!  It’s okay, I incorporated the complimentary chips and salsa into my meal again.  My pictures aren’t too exciting, but the entrees look awesome on their website.  Lunch was good and cheap, but I MUST come back for dinner.

Oh!  Apparently, this place burned down recently (probably just the inside), and it took them eight months to rebuild.  It looks completely different.  They moved the bar closer to the front door.  Great idea!  Also, they have a private dining area, dining upstairs, and two patios!  Anyways, check out their link below.  Good stuff.

Shuck N Jive at Lovers and Greenville

I usually come here for the snow crab legs.  They’re always very good!  Of course, it comes with drawn butter, roasted potatoes, and corn on the cob.  It’s a pretty large portion for only $18.99.  So large that if I don’t crack and eat fast enough, it gets a bit cold in the end, so crack fast, y’all!  Cajun seasoning gives it a nice kick.  Yes, I went cajun again.  Sorry.  I gotta stick with a good thing.

Anyways, this time I decided to try things I’ve never had.  The menu said that the crab stuffed shrimp was an employee favorite, so I HAD to get it.  It was fantastic!  The texture, sauce, batter, and seasoning made me so happy!  (Check out the pictures).  Also, the blackened chicken pasta is “the most popular item on the menu”, so my friend got it.  It was actually suggested by a past employee that now works at Sundown (I’m currently the mayor there on Foursquare.  It’s a big deal.  Not really.)  Well, he loved it, and I loved every bite I stole from him.  The food was so good that I didn’t even notice that karaoke was going on until I left.  They really didn’t have a ton of beer selections, but the food made up for it.  Check it out.

Vickery Park on Henderson!

This is by far one of the best neighborhood bars I’ve ever been to.  It’s just dark enough so you can’t see my slight imperfections…  Just kidding.  I have a lot of imperfections.  Anyways, I’d like to apologize because in the beginning, I promised to keep all my posts short and sweet, but they seem to be getting longer and longer and longer and…  It doesn’t help that I just added this sentence.  Sorry.  Vickery Park.  I had the Rosemary Chicken on this visit.  The flavor was amazing, and it was HALF PRICE because it was on a TUESDAY!  Also, the bearded bartenders are SUPER nice.  I love the ambiance indoors, and the patio is super cool.  Also, if you’re looking for a lounge area, they got it.  Oh, if you like mussels, they are really good here.  Chicken fried steak?  “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner”!!!  Gravy and mashed potatoes.  Mmmmmmm.  You like mac and cheese?  They do it well.  So good.  You like spicy?  Get the shrimp and scallop pasta with the chipotle Alfredo sauce.  Best sandwich?  Smoked turkey club.  They also have crab cakes and calamari.  Okay, I’ll stop reciting the menu.   Check out the menu on their website.  Their food is really good.  Short and sweet.

Victor Tangos at Knox/Henderson and Central (75)!!!

I love this place!  The food is delicious, and it’s a great escape from the outside world.  No windows.  It’s like a big, cozy, well lit, basement, with awesome people.  When I walk in, I feel like I just entered a well kept secret.  Almost like I shouldn’t be here.  The staff here are super nice.  I just can’t help but smile when any of them speak to me.  Also, I noticed a lot of Texas brews on draft.  I love that!  I had the Fireman #4, and my buddy had the Lakewood Wheat.

For food, we started with a flatbread.  I try to be sure and order whatever’s written on the board behind the bar, because it’s ALWAYS good.  The flatbread had grilled shrimp, lemongrass sausage, fresh jalapenos, cheese, etc. etc.  It was great.  After that we had the dayboat scallops, mussels, and roasted bone marrow.  The bone marrow came with caramelized onions (“onion confit”) and buttered toast.  Be sure to put it all together for the best bite ever!  The scallops laid on a bed of mushroom risotto and black bean sauce.  The mussels were served with a buttered baguette, and we discovered more lemongrass sausage in the bowl!  Wow.  I usually get the lollypop lamb chops, but I was a bit full after that random “surf and turf” we devoured.

For dessert, I was gonna get the toffee cake with an extra side of that fancy whipped cream.  I always get it, but opted for a cocktail called “The Last Word”.  I said, “can I get the last word?”, but he spoke, so I guess not.  LOL?  Not so much?  Oh well.  It was very good!  It had rye whiskey, lemon juice, green chartreuse, and maraschino liquor.  Shaken to perfection and poured in the least manly glass I could drink from…  as I kept my pinky out.  I was very happy with my cocktail as my dessert.  It was delicious, and I am not insecure, so I took my time.

Oh. They have so many other good things on the menu.  This is just what I had on this visit.  Definitely try other things. (tuna nachos)  Their kitchen is usually open until midnight EVERY night except Sunday when they’re closed, of course.  They’re located at Knox/Henderson and Central across from Velvet Taco and right next to Sleep Experts.

May 2014.  New Chef.  The menu has changed a bit.  Still very good.  Check it out.  They kept the most popular items if you’re worried about the bone marrow.  😉
